🔌 Charging Network Rollout
Tesla has also announced the initial rollout of its Supercharger network in India. The company plans to install at least 16 Supercharger plugs across:
-
Mumbai: BKC, Navi Mumbai, Thane
-
Delhi NCR: Aerocity, Gurgaon, Saket, Noida
These chargers will support Tesla’s fast-charging standards and are essential for promoting long-distance EV driving in India.
Will It Sell? Early Sales Projections
Tesla is targeting high-net-worth urban consumers, given the starting price of ₹60 lakh, which puts the Model Y firmly in the luxury EV segment.
Analysts expect 500–700 bookings in the first 2–3 months, mostly from Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. As supply stabilizes, monthly deliveries could settle around 200–300 units, depending on demand and infrastructure.
🧾 Why So Expensive in India?
While the Model Y costs around $43,000 (~₹36 lakh) in the U.S., the Indian version is significantly costlier due to import duties and taxes, which currently range between 70% to 110% on CBUs. Tesla's India strategy is shaped by these three key factors:
-
Import-first strategy: Test market reception without heavy investment upfront
-
Luxury positioning: Compete with BMW iX, Mercedes EQB, Volvo XC40 Recharge
-
Future manufacturing possibility: If sales are strong, Tesla may apply for 15% concessional duty under India’s new EV policy, provided it commits to $500M investment and local production in 3 years
🏢 Next: Delhi Showroom in Late July
Tesla isn’t stopping at Mumbai. Company officials confirmed that a second showroom will open in Delhi by the end of July 2025. The brand is also actively hiring sales and service staff for Delhi, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad.
